Interestingly, Bridgerton showrunner Chris Van Dusen took a somewhat shocking approach to the famously steamy show’s second season: He included almost no sex. A church might as well have no Bibles. But in place of the overt sex scenes, he filmed scene after scene of barely smothered passion and repressed desire.
“I will spend every day of my marriage wanting you. Dreaming of you. Dreading the day when my last thread of honor finally snaps,” the viscount whisper-moans to Kate Sharma. Eventually, their unspoken desire for each other becomes so obvious that a single look stops an entire wedding.
It’s tricky to claim that season two of Bridgerton maps onto the female gaze because, come on, women like watching sex scenes. But the risky-not-risqué strategy of building tension with very few exposed body parts paid dividends: Every one of Anthony’s shallow breaths has caused a tremor to run through America’s pants. Once again Bridgerton has us begging for more.
