Ruffle Waves Are the Most Romantic Hairstyle for Spring

Short haircuts have headlined the past couple of years—bobs, lobs, crops, pixie cuts—but longer lengths are stealing back the spotlight and ruffle waves are a major player that we love to see.

With hair lengths dropping their hemline, it leaves more room to experiment with texture, whether it’s celebrating your God-given waves, curls, and kinks, or getting back into the flow of things with styling tools. Lately we’ve seen mermaid waves, crimping and blow-dries everywhere on TikTok, but ruffle waves offer something a little less stylized and prescriptive, and they celebrate au naturel hair in all its glory.

Celebrity hairstylist Tom Smith highlighted the reemergence of longer-length waves over Fashion Week, dubbing them “Botticelli waves” or “long, unstructured, fluffy, textured waves or curls.”

“Named after the Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli, these waves were seen on many of the subjects of his work,” says Smith. “Long, loose, and unstructured with fluffy edges and a stretched-out shape.”

If you’re #blessed with beautiful fluffy texture already, the XXL lengths we’re seeing help to give the waves the space they deserve to shine.

If not, or your hair needs a little extra natural encouragement, “these can be achieved by braiding your hair two to four times in a middle or side parting and leaving overnight or heating with a hair dryer until the wave is set,” says Smith. “Styling powders and texurizing sprays are your best friend for the aerated fluffy finish.” He recommends Evo Hair’s Haze Powder
