If you’ve been on the internet over the past few days, then you know something is happening between Zayn Malik, Gigi Hadid, and Gigi’s mother, Yolanda. Here’s a breakdown of what’s reportedly going on.
On Thursday, October 28, TMZ published a report that Yolanda claims Zayn “struck” her. Sources told the outlet she’s considering filing a police report.
Later that day Zayn published a long, cryptic message that sources who spoke to People confirmed is about Yolanda. Here’s that statement in full:
“As you all know, I am a private person, and I very much want to create a safe and private space for my daughter to grow up in. A place where private family matters aren’t thrown on the world stage for all to poke and pick apart. In an effort to protect that space for her, I agreed not to contest claims arising from an argument I had with a family member of my partner’s who entered our home while my partner was away several weeks ago. This was and still should be a private matter, but it seems for now there is divineness, and despite my efforts to restore us to a peaceful family environment that will allow for me to co-parent my daughter in a matter in which she deserves, this has been ‘leaked’ to the press. I am hopeful, though, for healing for all involved with the harsh words shared, and more importantly I remain vigilant to protect Khai and give her the privacy she deserves.”
Shortly after this, Malik gave a more direct statement to TMZ: “I adamantly deny striking Yolanda Hadid, and for the sake of my daughter I decline to give any further details, and I hope that Yolanda will reconsider her false allegations and move towards healing these family issues in private.”
Then, later in the evening of October 28, news broke that Gigi and Zayn have split. “They are not together right now. They are both good parents, though,” a Hadid family friend told People. “They co-parent. Yolanda is, of course, very protective of Gigi. She wants the best for her daughter and grandchild.”
“Gigi is solely focused on the best for Khai. She asks for privacy during this time,” a rep for Gigi told People. Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik’s daughter, Khai, is now 13 months old.
So, what happens next?
Based on court documents reviewed by TMZ on October 29, elle.com confirmed that Malik has been charged with four counts of harassment against both Yolanda and Gigi. While court officials told TMZ that Malik pled no contest to one charge on Wednesday, October 27, one document reportedly describes the singer as pleading guilty. According to TMZ, Malik will pay a fine and is “on 90 days probation for each count, totaling 360 days.” On top of the fine, Malik reportedly “must complete an anger management class and a domestic violence program.”
Per the court documents, an argument occurred between Malik, Gigi, and Yolanda at the former couple’s Pennsylvania home on September 29. Though Gigi was in Paris at the time, multiple sources told TMZ that the charges pertaining to the model stem from an alleged phone call. Court documents reviewed by TMZ allege Malik screamed at Gigi to “strap on some fucking balls and defend your partner against your fucking mother in my house.”
While Malik has denied physically striking Yolanda, TMZ reports that court documents allege he “shoved her into a dresser causing mental anguish and physical pain.” He also reportedly called Yolanda a “fucking Dutch slut.”
On top of the fines and anger management courses, Malik must reportedly sever contact with Yolanda Hadid, as well as a security guard he allegedly attempted to fight during the altercation. Per TMZ, a judge may terminate probation should Malik complete all conditions within six months.
