Frosted ’90s Eye Shadow Is Making a Comeback

Warm-toned bronzy eyes have ruled the aughts and 2010s, but after a long stretch on the bench, frosted ’90s eye shadow has been picked up, dusted down, and given a seriously cool modern makeover.

For millennium babies who missed the O.G. hype, frosted ’90s eye shadow centers around cool-toned shades like lavender, lilac, icy blue, mint, silver, and pale pink in frosty metallic finishes. Stars like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Brandi helped put the trend on the map in the 1990s, and after a long, 20-year hiatus, it’s back and about to be just as big again.

Sparked by the viral makeup moments to come out of hit show Euphoria, led by makeup artist Doniella Davy, the trend for layering pastel glitz and sparkle across eyelids has captured the attention of TikTok and, unsurprisingly, gone stratospheric. The celebs are feeling it too. Hailey Bieber, Gigi Hadid, Joan Smalls, Doja Cat, and Ariana Grande have all hopped on board the trend recently, giving it a fresh spin.

And, we have to admit, we kind of love it. It’s playful, it’s cute, and it offers up more wearable ways to make our makeup a little more individual and interesting. As for how to keep it modern, the key is to mix textures to make it feel fresh. A dewy base looks beautiful alongside frosty metallics on lids. Or pair it with glossy lips and soft matte skin. Finish by loading up lashes with lots of mascara to maintain definition and keep them looking full.
