Shawn Mendes’ new song “When You’re Gone” is about his breakup with Camila Cabello—and he made sure to run the song by her before releasing it to the world.
In a new interview with Extra, the singer revealed that he wrote the song one month after his split from Cabello. After years of friendship, the pair dated for two years before announcing their breakup in November 2021. “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship, but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” they said at the time, per E! News. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”
For Mendes, “When You’re Gone” was all about the painful transition from being in a committed relationship to moving on by yourself. “A month later, you kind of start having all the memories of things that happened, and all the memories of so many amazing things,” Mendes explained to Extra, before adding that he shared the song with Cabello ahead of its release on April 1. “Camila and I have always been writers for as long as we’ve known each other, so we understand what that means. And we respect what that means. And there’ll always be transparency between us.”

While sharing the same piece of information with E! News, Shawn Mendes got a bit more personal about what his relationship with his ex looks like now. “Camila heard this song months ago, so we have a really honest relationship,” he said. “I would never really put a song out about her before she would hear it.”
He also insisted that he wouldn’t have released the song if she didn’t approve it. “She knows me and I know her, and ultimately, we both are writers and we both know what it is to make music and what the bigger picture of making art is,” he said. “We’re supportive of that, always.”
