Riviera Brunette Is the Hailey Bieber–Approved Shade for Spring

What better way to sum up the cultural mood than with a hair transformation? We’ve certainly seen plenty of them lately, and with the rise of Riviera brunette, expect to see more. Earlier this year Jean Campbell chopped off her long elfin locks in favor of a boyish pixie cut, after which Fran Summers unveiled a jet-black crop. Then, Kendall Jenner had her auburn moment at Prada, while Gigi Hadid made the case for platinum blonde. All head-swiveling moments of high drama.

In a world obsessed with instant gratification, these were big, bold statements. But there’s another, much subtler, movement happening in tandem. Enter: Riviera brunette. It’s warm, it’s rich, and it’s dynamic. It has the sun-kissed notes of your balayage but retains some of the mystery we associate with brunettes. Think Hailey Bieber, Lily James, Karlie Kloss, and Camille Charriere—all of whom have traded in their blonde tresses for rich, chocolaty tones. Below, Vogue spoke to master colorist Paul Bingham at London’s Larry King Salon for some expert insights into getting—and maintaining—the look.

Can you tell us a bit about the Riviera brunette shade?

With spring and summer 2022 looming at Larry King, myself and the color team have been working on new color trends, and one trend that is starting to stand out to us is Riviera brunette, or what we have named “beached brunette” in the salon.

Why do you think it’s trending at the moment?

It’s very popular as we are going into spring and summer—hair is becoming more hyper-feminine and relaxed, and styling becomes more natural.

What makes it different from a balayage?

It feels more natural and organic, almost as if the hair has been naturally lightened from sea salt and heat from the sun.
