Kelly Clarkson proves yet again that she is the queen of covers with a beautiful tribute to Dolly Patron at the 2022 Academy of Country Music Awards on Monday, March 7. At the ceremony, the American Idol alum sang a rendition of Parton’s 1973 song “I Will Always Love You,” a classic that was also immortalized by Whitney Houston in her own cover for the 1992 movie The Bodyguard.
The Kelly Clarkson Show host performed the song with an acoustic guitar and piano backing, to many applauds and cheers from celebs and fans alike. Parton was particularly moved by the performance and joined Clarkson onstage with an embrace that showed how much love there is between the two country icons.
The 9 to 5 singer hosted the show alongside country singers Jimmie Allen and Gabby Barrett. And while this homage to Parton was spectacular, it didn’t come as a surprise, considering Clarkson had shared on her show last month that a special number was in the works for the 2022 ACM awards.
Clarkson had hinted at the performance on her talk show, saying, “I’m super stoked because the one and only Dolly Parton is hosting, and I have a special tribute planned just for her.”

After the performance, Parton spoke to how moved she was by the tribute. “I was backstage trying not to cry my false eyelashes off—slinging snot in every direction and tears,” the country singer said. “But anyway, that was an amazing job.”
The Tennessee icon added that even Houston would be amazed at the Grammy-winning singer’s performance. “Oh, my gosh. That is so great. I know that Whitney is smiling down on us tonight,” she said.
Clarkson isn’t new to covering songs from Parton’s repertoire. In 2020 she performed a rendition of Parton’s 1984 holiday song “Hard Candy Christmas” on her talk show. The pair have also united for a duet of the Grammy-winning song “9 to 5,” in honor of a documentary about the movie that inspired the hit single.
