What a Girl Wants star Amanda Bynes is thanking fans for their support as she works to end the conservatorship she’s been under for nearly a decade.
Conservatorships have come under increased scrutiny over the past few years, given the attention around Britney Spears’s contentious conservatorship, which recently ended. Bynes’s situation, however, has some key differences.
Like Spears, Bynes grew up in the limelight and struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues. In 2013, she was involuntarily hospitalized on a psychiatric hold after reportedly starting a fire on a stranger’s property, and her mother was granted a temporary conservatorship, which became a full conservatorship the following year. However, unlike in Spears’s situation, it doesn’t seem as if Bynes has been pressured to work to provide for her family. She applied to fashion school and refocused her energy there instead of acting, and she graduated from FIDM in 2019.

According to Bynes’s attorney David A. Esquibias, she is close to her parents and they support her decision to end her conservatorship. (A decision that was not made because of #FreeBritney, according to JustJared.) Esquibias told People in February, “Amanda wishes to terminate her conservatorship. She believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary.”
On March 7, Bynes herself took to Instagram—the page is unverified but the woman in the video appears to be her—to speak to fans directly. “What’s up, Instagram. Amanda Bynes here. My court date is coming up in two weeks. I want to thank you all for your love and support. Peace out,” she says before lashing a peace sign.
