Evan Rachel Wood Transforms Into 1980s Madonna in Her Latest Film

If you’re anything like me, you can go maybe 72 hours, tops, without giving in to the urge to google “When is Westworld coming back?” Ugh, I miss it so much. But yesterday brought good news! No, still no word on the new season—but one of its biggest stars, Evan Rachel Wood, has been keeping busy doing something extremely awesome: looking exactly like Madonna.

Wood posted a photo of herself to Instagram on Wednesday, March 2, in which she’s dressed and made up to uncannily resemble Madonna circa 1984. The still is from Roku’s upcoming Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a film about “Weird Al” Yankovic’s unusual and award-winning career, starring Daniel Radcliffe as the curly-haired king of parody songs. As those of us who lived through the ’80s will recall, one of Yankovic’s biggest hits, “Like a Surgeon,” was based on Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” (In fact, legend has it that it was actually Madonna’s idea.) So it makes perfect sense that she’d make an appearance in the biopic—and now that I see Wood’s photo, it makes perfect sense that she’d play her. With the help of makeup, hair, and wardrobe, the likeness is undeniable.

“The secret’s out!” Wood wrote in the caption of the still, which shows her in a black-and-white, lacy, jewelry-heavy getup true to Madonna’s style at the time. Her dirty-blonde hair with dark roots is topped with a tulle headband. “I am having WAY TOO MUCH FUN playing the iconic Madonna in @therokuchannel‘s WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story with Daniel Radcliffe. ✨🙌🏻🙌🏻😱😱💋

Allure reached out to the film’s talented makeup artist, Kat Bardot, who’s not yet at liberty to give details about the production’s star-transforming process. But what we can tell from the additional close-up she posted to Instagram of Wood is that she precisely shaped Wood’s lip line to look more like Madonna’s mouth, filling in with a glossy berry red shade. Wood’s eyes are fully lined with black pencil, and she’s wearing golden yellow and coppery brown shadow on her mobile lid and crease respectively. Her brows are perfectly fluffed, her cheeks are host to a bright pink blush, and of course, there’s a little dot next to her philtrum to represent Madonna’s beauty mark.

In the caption, Bardot says this is “one of a handful of looks” she created for Wood as Madonna and that working with the actor “has been an absolute joy.” So I definitely can’t wait to see the other Madonna looks—not to mention how Radcliffe looks as Yankovic—when the movie premieres. (Dammit, another premiere I have to obsessively google?)
