The ’90s Blowout Bob Combines Two of 2022’s Major Hair Trends

The ’90s blowout bob is an iconic duo. Ben and Jen, or burgers and fries, are all well and good, but when it comes to hair, there’s been a number of delicious collaborations combining recently to take our strands to the next level. Take the bixie (pixie bob), the wolf cut (mullet meets shag) or the liquid bob, for example. They pair up hairstyles that are fabulous on their own but elite when combined.

Which brings us back to the ’90s blowout bob. It takes two of 2022’s biggest hair trends—the bounce blowout and the classic bob—and unites the two into the coolest partnership, taking them up a league.

We keep spotting the throwback look on the feeds of all our favourite influencers. And from the looks of things, we’ve tossed away casual waves, messy buns and “lazy girl” hair for something much more glossy and glam. Although 2020 and 2021 may have been the year of dirty hair and tracky bums, 2022? We ’come to play.

Given that the bob was the biggest cut of last year (and is on track to do the same again), it makes sense that it’s had a glow-up to reflect where we are now. We’re going out again, we’re enjoying spending time getting ready, and we want to feel our best.

That said, we’re always on board with a hair hack to speed things up. So how do we elevate our bobs (quite literally—we’re talking volume)? The hot brush is picking up from where our straighteners left off.

Our beauty crush, Afnan Dano, showed followers her ’90s blowout bob routine on TikTok, starting with some hair oil through lengths and ends before separating off damp sections and hot-brushing her hair, piece by piece, using Dyson’s Air Wrap with the round volumising brush attachment. She wraps her hair away from her face to get the airiest, bounciest ’90s bob going.

And digital creator Ines Silva swears by Coco & Eve’s Miracle Elixir to ensure her blowout looks healthy and glossy before blow-drying her hair partly dry, then switching to a hot brush to shape it while it’s ever so slightly damp. And for extra swoosh, a side part works wonders.

Don’t want to splash out on a hot brush? Hair rollers have also made a return, and they do the same job, just for a fraction of the price.
