Hairstylist Chris Appleton is known for spilling all the tea on how to recreate celebrity-approved hairstyles on his TikTok page. In fact, you’ve most likely seen his styling prowess all over the internet, considering he’s the go-to hairstylist for Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian. On February 10, Appleton posted one of his most buzzy and long-awaited hair tutorials: How to recreate model Bella Hadid’s signature middle-part bun.
Celebrities certainly spend hours having their hair tended to, but Appleton reveals how to recreate the model’s oft-worn slicked-back bun in a matter of 42 seconds. The (roughly) eight-part process begins with splitting the hair into two parts, followed by “saturating the roots with hairspray,” as Appleton explains in the video. Since hairspray is the main product fixture in every part of creating this look, we recommend using one with some serious hold such as R+Co’s Bleu Featherlight Hairspray.
After drenching the roots in hairspray, “snatch those cheekbones nice and tight—that’s the key part [of the process],” Appleton says. Then “connect the top pieces, leave a few of the pieces out, and pop the rest of the hair into a ponytail.” He sprays the ponytail with hairspray once again, then immediately twists the ponytail into a bun and leaves a little “sprout of hair out,” which he clamps down with a flat iron.

Since the model’s face-framing layers were a little shorter than Hadid’s, Appleton added some extensions to make them a little longer. He finished off the simple style by spraying Color Wow’s Extra Mist-ical Shine Spray over the hair for a high-gloss finish.
Thanks to Appleton, we’ll all become middle-part-bun professionals in no time.
