1. Make sure face is clean with a gentle cleanser.
2. Apply serums (including H.A. for hydration), peptides, etc.
3. Apply moisturizing cream, if feeling super dry.
4. Finish with a thin layer of Vaseline petroleum jelly.
“Apply a very thin layer of ointment to a clean face at night,” Dr. Marchbein says. “Literally I dab a tiny bit on each cheek, forehead, nose, and chin, then gently rub/pat in. I would also try to sleep on your back and consider changing your pillowcase more frequently. For slugging, I prefer Vaseline petroleum jelly, but other ointments include Aquaphor, Cerave ointment, or Vaniply ointment.”
My nightly process is pretty basic: I use a gentle cleanser, retinol, CeraVe’s Moisturizing Cream, and sub an AHA exfoliant for the retinol every other night. The routine leaves my combo skin largely zit-free (thank you, buffering), but winter’s dryness always creates some stubbornly red, flaky patches around my mouth. The goal: to rid them from my life. Thanks to early exposure to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, I’m not a huge fan of plain petroleum jelly. Instead, I went for Dove’s DermaSeries Expert Repairing Balm, which blends petrolatum with a few different silicones for a lighter, less oily texture.
Is slugging good for oily skin?
If you are oily or acne-prone, Dr. Marchbein suggests steering clear of slugging. “Keep in mind that slugging shouldn’t be used in those with oily or acne prone skin,” she says. “While Vaseline petroleum jelly is noncomedogenic—and I love using it for chapped, dry skin all over the body—I would not recommend applying to the entire face if you are acne-prone or very oily as it may clog pores. Instead, opt for a moisturizing cream that contains a mix of occlusives, emollients, and humectants like Cerave cream, La Roche Posay Lipikar, Vaseline Intensive Care or Vanicream.”
What are the results of slugging?
Despite all the talk about going to bed covered in mucus (blegh), I didn’t find the process terribly slimy, nor were there any trails of moisture across my pillow in the morning. The difference in my skin was night and day: It felt crazy soft as I splashed water on my face the next morning, if a bit strange—your skin feels so smooth that the water almost slides off. But after you dry off, there’s no residual grease or jelly. Your skin is just velvety and plump, and the effect lasts all day.
