You meets Gone Girl meets The Girl on the Train meets The Woman in the Window meets Rear Window meets…Scary Movie? I’m in.
Kristen Bell’s new Netflix series The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window, a satire of the popular “troubled woman gets caught up in a suburban murder” genre, just dropped its first trailer, and it looks like a cross between all our favorite beach reads. Bell plays Anna, a wine-guzzling, pill-popping, sweater-wearing suburbanite who witnesses a murder but can’t convince anyone to believe her.
The dialogue in the trailer is all basically straightforward murder mystery stuff, but there are self-aware comedic touches throughout, from the ridiculous cork collection on Anna’s kitchen island to the goofy tagline: “Every victim has a story…every murder has a witness…every neighbor has a window…but every story has a victim.” And, obviously, the title. Produced by Will Ferrell, this may be the parody that finally puts the, uh, final nail in this genre’s coffin. That is…until a body washes ashore!
The eight-episode series premieres on Netflix on January 28, but if you just can’t wait until then, we have two recommendations that will scratch the murder-mystery-but-make-it-funny itch: A Simple Favor starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, and Game Night starring Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman. Both have actual mysteries that are fun to solve but plenty of comedic moments too. ASF is like a high-fashion twisty whodunnit, but directed by Paul Feig, who also helmed Bridesmaids. And Game Night is a laugh-out-loud adult comedy that’s like Date Night turned up to 11. They both pair well with red and white wines.
Honestly can’t wait to start streaming TWITHATSFTGITW. Kristen Bell, baby, you can stab me any time. Or have me over for wine. Or both, honestly. Let’s do both.
