Everyone’s favorite Brit and extremely attractive human being Andrew Garfield recently revealed he was once told he wasn’t handsome enough for a role.
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight while discussing his critically acclaimed performance in Netflix’s Tick, Tick…Boom!, Garfield said he auditioned for the role of Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008), and admitted he was “desperate” to appear in the film (as he was just starting out as an actor in Hollywood).
“I remember I was so desperate,” Garfield told ET, per Variety. “I auditioned for Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia and I thought, This could be it, this could be it. And that handsome, brilliant actor Ben Barnes ended up getting the role. I think it was down to me and him, and I remember I was obsessed.”
Garfield recalled pestering his agent about why he didn’t get the role. Said agent “eventually just broke under my incessant nagging, and she was like, ‘It’s because they don’t think you’re handsome enough, Andrew.’”
“Ben Barnes is a very handsome, talented man,” Garfield said. “So in retrospect, I’m not unhappy with the decision, and I think he did a beautiful job.”
This is not the first time the Oscar nominee has discussed losing the role of Prince Caspian to Ben Barnes, whom you might recognize from Netflix’s Shadow and Bone or HBO’s Westworld. While promoting his 2016 film Silence, Garfield, also speaking to Entertainment Tonight, discussed how desperate he was for the role, and mentioned he lost it because he was not as handsome as Ben Barnes. You can watch the video here. In my humble opinion, both men are very handsome, and I think about them constantly, thank you very much!
Of course, Andrew Garfield is doing just fine having not played Prince Caspian. In 2010 he had his breakout role as Eduardo Saverin in David Fincher’s The Social Network, which earned him instant stardom and Oscar buzz (he should have been nominated but was not). Since, he has played Spider-Man and appeared in films from legendary directors including Martin Scorsese. Now he’s a Golden Globe winner for his role in Tick, Tick…Boom!, which will likely earn him another Oscar nomination. And maybe a win!
