The revival will address the coronavirus pandemic. Parker told Vanity Fair that COVID-19 will “obviously be part of the storyline because that’s the city [these characters] live in. I have great faith that the writers are going to examine it all.”
The cast will reportedly include more diversity. In May, TVLine reported that (around) six new characters will be introduced in the new episodes, three of them series regulars who are also women of color. HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys said that Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King “didn’t want to tell a story with all-white writers or an all-white cast” because “it’s not reflective of New York. So they are being very, very conscious about understanding that New York has to reflect the way New York looks today.” The writing staff for the reboot is reportedly half people of color, including the hilarious Samantha Irby.
In fact, race is a central storyline. “We can talk about the elephant in the room that there were no fully fleshed-out characters of color, but now here’s the four of us. We’re real people, and they’ve been great to work with, and some of our [storylines] deal with race and deal with real experiences. It’s New York City!” new cast member Nicole Ari Parker told Variety in October. Cathy Ang, who plays Charlotte’s daughter Lily, expressed similar sentiments in an interview with Cosmopolitan, revealing, ”I really think it is going to showcase the way that our beloved trio can actually interact with women of color today…And even at a table read, there’s always discussion about how to make sure that these characters are properly representing a real person…I think those conversations are constantly happening with the writers, with the producers, and they’re so open to it. And I see it in the storylines. I also don’t think it’s going to reduce anyone to just the color of their skin.”
Sara Ramirez will play one of the new characters. Tony winner Ramirez, who is nonbinary, will play the show’s first nonbinary character in a “series regular” role. The Hollywood Reporter revealed on May 19 that Ramirez’s character is “Che Diaz (they/them), a nonbinary, queer stand-up comedian who hosts a podcast on which Carrie is regularly featured. Che is a big presence with a big heart whose outrageous sense of humor and progressive, human overview of gender roles has made them and their podcast very popular.”
Nicole Ari Parker, Karen Pittman and Sarita Choudhury are also joining the cast! Parker welcomed four new actors to the series in an Instagram post on July 15, writing, “@justlikethatmax And finally!!!! THRILLED to welcome @therealsararamirez, @NicoleAriParker, Karen Pittman and Sarita Choudhury to #AndJustLikeThat. Can’t wait to work with these brilliant actors who bring so much talent, humor and excitement to our ensemble. X, SJ”
Charlotte’s and Miranda’s husbands will return. HBO confirmed on June 9 that Steve Brady (David Eigenberg) and Harry Goldenblatt (Evan Handler) are going to appear in the revival. Plus, that’s not where the love ends: Willie Garson will also reprise his role as Stanford Blatch, and Mario Cantone will return as Stanford’s husband, Anthony Marentino.
