Prince Harry Slams the Term ‘Megxit’: ‘It’s Misogynistic’

Prince Harry is taking issue with the term “Megxit,” which has been used to describe his and Meghan Markle‘s decision to step back from the royal family. (It’s a play on Brexit, used by many when talking about the U.K.’s withdrawal from the European Union.)

Speaking at Wired magazine’s Re:Wired virtual summit in New York City, Prince Harry said (per People), “The term ‘Megxit’ was or is a misogynistic term that was created by a troll, amplified by world correspondents, and it grew and grew and grew onto mainstream media. But it began with a troll.”

Prince Harry also discussed misinformation in the media as a whole. “Misinformation is a global humanitarian crisis,” he said. “I felt it personally over the years, and I’m now watching it happen globally affecting everyone, not just America, literally everyone around the world. I learned from a very early age that the incentives of publishing are not necessarily aligned with the incentives of the truth.”

The Duke of Sussex then addressed the media’s involvement in the death of his mother, Princess Diana. “I know the story all too well,” he said. “I lost my mother to this self-manufactured rabidness, and obviously I’m determined not to lose the mother to my children to the same thing.”

Prince Harry said the media bias against Markle was a major part of their decision to relieve themselves from senior royal duties and move to the United States. “More than 70% of the hate speech about my wife on Twitter can be traced to fewer than 50 accounts,” he said, adding that tabloid journalists are “amplifying the hate and the lies” and “regurgitating these lies as truth.” “Real journalists have the power and the will to tackle racism, misogyny, lies, all of it from within their own systems,” the duke said.
