Fast-forward a few years into 2017, when she was already an understudy in the Broadway musical Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 . During the time she finally stepped into the lead role, the pressure to be high quality was enormous—it was the period in more than 10 years that your particular South Asian woman a new lead role on Broadway.
“Personally, I actually didn’t have anyone to seek out when I was growing up, ” she says. There weren’t ebony girls getting kissed in rain on movie types or singing in real dresses on Broadway arrêt. The closest thing for almost any ’90s kid was Aladdin’s Princess Jasmine, a cartoon, an improbably proportioned fictional character.
“To have someone who was healthy, could sing, was enchanting, desirable, and brave, wanted to do question authority and doubtless rule a kingdom… I needed to be her, ” Narayan says. She grew up belting “A Whole New World” throughout family room, and even grew your girl hair out to match the smoothness. “She was the only aspect that I had to relate to, ” says Narayan. “So your lover meant a lot to me. ”
When the outbreak closed down Broadway, Narayan was performing in Wicked on Broadway. It was full-circle for the onetime Dorothy portrayer—she was playing Nessarose, the actual Wicked Witch of the East. When the theater turned mysterious, Narayan returned her sparkly slippers. Months later, your lady got a call produced by her agent. Suddenly called was auditioning for her imagination role over Zoom. Look you’ve had a rough virtual meeting ? But taylor got the part. She’ll is climbing very, very, carefully aboard a carpet which can whisk her high the particular air, where she’ll voice an iconic song, for my rapt audience. She imagines her body and your partner voice floating in that amazing, empty space, the “gasps and tears and cheers” of the audience.
Whenever she plays a significant role, Narayan says, lindsay hears from people through the South Asian community. Rather she also hears from many people coming from all different minorities. “They tell someone like me being the lead in the show, portraying a character who is strong and recommended and the center of the story, ” she says. “I express they all feel seen which they’re represented onstage. ”
Soon she’ll be sharing her promotional merchandise with audiences who have not seen a live performance of years. There will be laughter, closed fist pumps, rapturous applause.
